How the index works

  • The BRAKE Index is equal-weighted: each company counts the same, regardless of size.
  • Price return only, in local currency. Dividends and currency moves are excluded.
  • Base is each stock's last 2025 trading-day close.
  • Median is shown alongside the average because one outlier (Nisshinbo) can move an equal-weight basket.
  • The Pure-Play Index includes only companies where brakes and friction are the majority of revenue.

Who's in and who isn't

  • To qualify, braking or friction must be a material part of revenue (or a core category for aftermarket retailers), with a major-exchange listing and dependable daily prices.
  • Candidates come from the company directory in The Brake Industry Handbook.
  • Aisin, Hyundai Mobis, Nisshinbo and ITT are diversified groups; braking is only part of their business.
  • ITT is included for its ITT Friction Technologies unit, and Motorcar Parts of America for the Centric and StopTech brands it bought in 2026.
  • Retailers and distributors are included because brake parts are a core aftermarket category for them.
  • Private companies are not in the index. Where one is owned by a listed company, the roster names that parent.

Data and corrections

  • Prices are end-of-day closes from public market sources, checked against a second source where possible.
  • Earnings figures come from company releases and filings. Private company revenue is shown only where the company publishes it.
